Founded by financier and entrepreneur Robert Friedland, Ivanhoe Pictures develops, produces, and acquires content for a global audience. In partnership with international producers and studios, the Company produces local-language film and television content in select countries including China, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Latin America. The company's offices are in Los Angeles, New York, and Beijing.
Ivanhoe chooses its projects with an eye toward the “local-language” market, developing and financing intellectual properties in association with partners in various international territories. Ivanhoe projects are released in the country of origin or often distributed globally via international distribution partners.
Ivanhoe was formed in late 2013 as a motion picture and television financing and production entity. With Fox International Pictures, the Company produced the South Korean thriller THE WAILING by director Na Hong-jin (THE CHASER, THE YELLOW SEA), which has become Fox's all-time second-highest grossing film in Korea.
In association with along with Warner Bros, Ivanhoe produced and co-financed the hit romantic comedy CRAZY RICH ASIANS, an adaptation of Kevin Kwan's best-selling novel directed by Jon M. Chu (NOW YOU SEE ME 2), with a fully-Asian cast including Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu, and Henry Golding—a first for a Hollywood studio.
In March 2017, Ivanhoe announced a merger with Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, the Los Angeles-based production-finance company, to form SK Global. China Cultural and Entertainment Fund (CCEF), a China-focused private equity fund and prominent investment management company, is taking a substantial equity position in SK Global. The venture is overseen by John Penotti, seasoned President and producer who has led companies such as GreeneStreet Films, Ivanhoe Pictures, and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Together, the new entity will focus on premium content with worldwide reach and local market understanding.
